42 Years of Legacy: Our Final Day

As we conclude the final page in our story, join us in one final reflection of our phenomenal story.

As we close this final chapter of our story, on our last day as a charity, we want to take a moment to reflect on more than four decades of extraordinary impact.

From our radical grassroots beginnings as the Greenwich Lesbian and Gay Centre in 1984, to becoming METRO Charity, we have spent over 42 years standing proudly alongside people navigating life, identity, and wellbeing through inclusive, life-changing services. Community has always been at the heart of who we are, and without you, our work and legacy would not have been possible.

For many, METRO has been a lifeline: a place where someone listens without judgment, where support is both practical and compassionate, and where difference is celebrated. It has been a space where activists have taken to the streets, where meaningful change has been driven through campaigning and advocacy, and where people have discovered themselves, found community, and built lifelong friendships.

This history and this impact can never be erased.

We want to say a final, heartfelt thank you to our incredible team of staff and volunteers. METRO simply would not have existed without you. From our founding members and early pioneers to our current team, thank you for bringing your energy, compassion, skills, lived experience, and love into everything you’ve done. Your tireless work has had an immeasurable impact and has saved lives. From the very beginning to the very end, you have gone above and beyond to create change, support others, and stand alongside the communities who need it most. We know you will continue to do life-changing work in the chapters ahead.

And finally, thank you to all of you for being part of our story. Your unwavering support has enabled us to deliver vital services to those who need them most for over forty years. Whether you are a service user, partner, volunteer, funder, or supporter, you have helped shape our legacy and ensure our place in history.

While our doors may be closing, we take comfort in knowing that other organisations and opportunities are ready to welcome you to help you feel seen, affirmed, and supported.

Remember: you are not alone. Support is out there if you need it.
Be bold. Be yourself. Embrace difference.
