Response to the government's non-statutory guidance for schools and colleges in England

We are extremely concerned about the contents of the UK government’s draft guidance for schools and colleges for gender-questioning children, released on the 19th of December 2023.

We at METRO Charity are extremely concerned about the direct impact this could have on many of the young people who access our services. We also question the choice of timing for the release of this draft guidance, so shortly before parliamentary recess, schools closing for winter holidays, and the festive season.

Please note this is currently draft guidance, subject to consultation, so no changes to how schools and colleges operate should be made at this stage.

We will be collating a thorough response to the consultation, which closes on Tuesday 12th March 2024, and encourage others to do so too. The consultation is open to individuals, groups and organisations.

We firmly believe that every trans, non-binary and gender-diverse student should feel safe and supported in order to flourish in education and wider society.
