METRO Essex HIV support through collaboration

Our Justin Barley talks about our long-established partnership with The OutHouse

"Having worked alongside The OutHouse for many years, together we assist one another to offer much needed support to those identifying as LGBTQ+. METRO offers staff and volunteers at The OutHouse up-to-date HIV awareness training and we regularly refer individuals seeking support to their counselling service. Often those identifying as LGBTQ+ and living with HIV will go on to join The OutHouse groups and social events, which provide a wider support network and a welcoming community.

"Each month METRO Essex holds their North Essex peer support group for people living with HIV over at The OutHouse. Whether newly diagnosed or having lived with HIV for years, this group aims to be a safe place for people to come and talk, get support and reduce isolation through shared experiences. We also work closely with the HIV clinic in Colchester supporting people with the many social aspects of living with HIV, alongside getting to grips with the medical treatment they receive from their clinic.

"Recognising that living with HIV can leave people confused and unable to disclose their status to family and friends, as well as the struggle of processing stigma and self-stigma, we at METRO are here to support you!"
