Monkeypox

A summary of key information that we know so far about Monkeypox (MPX)

There are a number of cases of Monkeypox that have been identified here within the UK. While monkey pox can affect anyone, the majority of those cases among gay and bisexual men, with a proportionate amount of cases being located in London.

What is it?

Monkeypox is a virus passed from animals to humans, and most cases have occurred in West and Central Africa.  Monkeypox can also be transmitted from human to human.  Symptoms usually appear 5 to 21 days after infection. Monkeypox is a rare viral infection mainly spread by wild animals. It is very rare in the UK. It is important to note that monkeypox is not an STI by nature, however, it can be passed on by direct contact during sex.

How is it transmitted human to human?

Coming into contact with coughs/sneezes, exchange of bodily fluids, contact with blisters/lesions/scabs, touching bedding, clothing, towels of a person with monkeypox. Monkeypox spreads through close contact, so is likely being spread during sex rather than sexual transmission.

What are the symptoms?

Rash, blisters, high temperature, head ache, muscle aches and fatigue.

What should I do if I experience Monkeypox symptoms?

Current advice is to self-isolate and call your GP, 111, or a sexual health clinic and not attend a walk-in.  If you are diagnosed with Monkeypox, as well as getting the treatment you need to feel better, you will also be asked for any details of close contacts who may be confidentially informed and may be asked to self-isolate or offered a smallpox vaccine.  You will be asked to self-isolate and avoid unprotected sex for 8 weeks after your diagnosis. Sexual health clinics are getting in touch with close contacts of anyone diagnosed with monkeypox.

Alternatively, you can call the Terrence Higgins Trust helpline for advice.
