Changes to gender identity services

Our response to NHS England's plan to provide a more resilient and robust gender identity service from 2023.

We welcome the news that NHS England plan to provide a more refined gender identity service for 2023 by increasing provision to ensure a higher quality of care is received by trans, non-binary, and gender-diverse young people within the UK.

We remain hopeful that we will see improvements within access and quality of local services, and a greater capacity for young people to receive the vital support they may need.

We welcome the recommendations highlighted within the Cass Review's Interim Report, however, remain conscious of delays that may be encountered as NHS England implement some of these changes.

We will be closely monitoring NHS England's progress in the creation of two new services led by specialist children’s hospitals in London and north-west England - replacing the current, heavily criticised gender identity clinic for children at the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust.

In addition, we call on NHS England to invest in the longevity of this change, to ensure plans continue to develop, and further improvements to provision and quality of care can be made.

We look forward to further recommendations from the completition of the Cass Review.
