Discriminatory dress codes remain widespread
Existing law is not fully effective in protecting employees from discrimination at work

Workplace dress codes have a lot to do with our understanding of gender and social roles in a professional environment. A debate about the compulsory use of high heel shoes ruled by some companies recently took place in the parliament, who also produced a report.
The Government has said that the existing law is clear, and that the dress code that prompted this petition is already unlawful. Nevertheless, discriminatory dress codes remain widespread. It is, therefore, clear that the existing law is not yet fully effective in protecting employees from discrimination at work. The debating commission calls on the Government to review this area of the law and to ask Parliament to change it, if necessary, to make it more effective.
